The history of the Highland clearances Alexander Mackenzie Books
Anyone who believes that the English were the greatest enemies and potential destroyers of Scotland and the Scots should read this series of eyewitness accounts of the Highland Clearances. They would soon understand that the most culpable of destroyers were the Highland Chieftains who, under English Law that was applied in Scotland, henceforth OWNED land they had once lived upon as leaders, but only with the consent and support of the clansmen who obeyed and defended them. This loyalty was to be the undoing of the clansmen and their families who became the VICTIMS of Chieftains, set up as Lords and owners of the land under English Law. This is not a book written with spin or opinion to put forward personal viewpoints. These are eyewitness accounts of atrocities. A heartrending read for all Scotsmen, particularly those of Highland descent.

The history of the Highland clearances Alexander Mackenzie Books Reviews
My interest in Scottish history was satisfied to the extreme. This was a sad, sad time for the Highlands folk.
Provides a hidden history that was never taught in school. It is both sad and provocative as it reveals an ugly truth and provides explanation to why things happened the way they did. A must read for anyone Scottish or of Scottish heritage.
This is a well written account of what did go on in Scotland, which I was on the whole; unaware of. I was also very surprised and disapointed as you how uncaring and cruel our own leaders were.
it was badly editde on kindle repetative and boring
Unforgettable accounts of a very dark chapter in the history of Britain which saw the callous disregard of the distress brought to whole communities in rural Scotland. An excellent primary source for historians, teachers and general readers written during the events described, in the words of witnesses and participants.
This book should be in the family libraries of every descendant of Scotland.
The History Of The Highland Clearances (Mercat Classics)
Very interesting bit of history for those who have forgotten.
A sad piece of Scottish history, the details of which are not common knowledge (for me anyhow). The book covers all of the areas of the Highlands in turn and is somewhat repetitive, but only because the actions of the lairds was repeated. Interesting that the clearances were mostly completed before the media and the public began to raise questions. Still, the perpetrators were not sanctioned and the effects are still obvious today in the small population living in the Highlands.
